Ras Al Khaimah: The mother of a 31-year-old Palestinian woman who died suddenly earlier this month, said a constant barrage of family rows, beatings and verbal abuse caused her death.
Her family has attributed her death to the way her husband, who was also her cousin, treated her during their 15-year marriage.
She lived "the most miserable life a human being has ever lived on this planet," the family said.
The woman, M.R. was suddenly hospitalised, suffering from a heart attack and anaemia. M.R. was taken to Saqr Hospital where she was admitted for two weeks until her condition improved. On the day she was discharged, she died.
Gulf News tried to get the husband to comment but failed.
The woman's mother and sister arrived at the hospital to take M.R. home and she decided to go back with her mother for a special meal. Her mother left and her two sisters prepared the meal. M.R.'s mother, however, received a call from her younger daughter informing her that M.R. had gone into a deep sleep. The woman asked her daughter to call a doctor, who pronounced M.R. dead.
The family could do nothing except hold the woman's husband responsible for the death of their daughter, claiming he had forced her to live a miserable life.
"No person could have endured that suffering," said M.R.'s mother.
Neighbours say the husband refused to bury his wife in the cemetery next to her family, but buried her in Shaam Cemetery.
M.R. married her relative when she was 15 years old and had four children - two daughters, and two sons who are mentally disabled.
Her mother said the man used to beat up and insult his wife, who was patient and lived with him for the sake of her children. The mother added that he did not provide for his family's basic needs. Sources added the husband used to create problems for his wife for no reason, adding many people had asked him to treat his wife better but to no avail. The family says its tragedy will continue even after M.R.'s death, questioning the fate of the couple's children, especially their mentally disabled sons.
Seek help: Domestic violence
The Domestic Guidance and Family Reconciliation Section at RAK Court is dedicated to addressing family problems, including domestic violence.
The section is the official department which receives family-related problems, mainly from the woman's side, provided that the section has Emirati women employees to help in the process.
The section has received scores of cases and handled them in confidence. The section has a number of researchers to study the cases and submits detailed reports on every case.
A senior official said that scores of women had contacted the section and reported domestic violence issues which were handled and resolved.
The official said the section had adopted several techniques to handle domestic issues and had wide jurisdiction to handle cases.
