Dubai: Chinese expatriates here said they are tough and resilient people equipped to overcome any disasters - including earthquakes.
"We are tough people and do not believe in making a big hue and cry about problems," said Su, a housewife living in Dubai.
Most Chinese working and living in the UAE come from the north and south of China.
"It would be rare to find someone from central China where the earthquake struck," said Jai Li, a Chinese expatriate who works in the hospitality sector.
"Our country is well-equipped to tackle this disaster. Our prime minister visited the site and got first-hand information on the rescue operations."
There were a number of Chinese at Dubai's Dragon Mart who said they were just not aware of the earthquake.
"Earthquake, what earthquake? I don't know anything. We are here at the shop doing business from 9am to late at night. After that we go home, have dinner, work the day's accounts and sleep," said Nabeel.
Sisi Lui who works in sales at the Dragon Mart said she had seen the earthquake's effects on television.
"Many of those from South China have their families living with them. Chinese construction workers usually come from North China," said Lui.
Some Chinese expatriates were reluctant to talk about the disaster that has killed thousands north of Sichuan's provincial capital of Chengdu but instead spoke about the 2008 Olympics to be held in Beijing.
