Dubai: A blind rescue-home puppy, Ringo, has inspired a 24-hour dance and singathon to raise money for K9 Friends dog home, which is running over capacity.
The dog home cares for strays and abandoned dogs.
Sarita and Phil Barnet adopted Ringo a few weeks ago from K9, after she was found caged up and left outside in the heat.
Her blindness could be congenital, said Sarita, as Ringo does not seem to have eye slots and in fact possibly has no eyes.
"We saw her in tabloid! and thought no-one would want a blind puppy. She might have been left there forever so we decided to go and get her," said Sarita, British and owner of six other, mostly rescued dogs.
"While we were there two people came to give back dogs. They didn't want them after only a week or gave them up after a year because they were leaving the country," she said.
Ringo has adapted well and has even mastered the dog flap at her Ras Al Khor home.
Tree trunks have been padded with blankets so that Ringo can avoid hurting herself as she discovers her new home and feels grass under her paws for the first time. She only bumps into trees when she gets excited, say her new owners.
Janice Shaw, Sarita's sister, decided to organise a fundraising event to help K9 with their work.
"We wanted to do something fun so we have come up with a danceathon, there will be karaoke too. We we want people to pledge to dance or sing a song. It will go on for 24 hours and hopefully will be good fun," said Shaw.
The Grand Hyatt has offered a ballroom for the event which is scheduled from noon on August 22 to noon the next day.
Music will be played for 24 hours and the dance floor open to teams or individuals who want to support the cause. Sponsorship should be acquired for every hour danced.
"Everyone can take part. It's open to anyone and to all schools," said Shaw.
The event is not connected with the annual Puppy Ball held by K9 Friends but is being organised by volunteers and supporters of the group.
To support the event musicians, bands, DJs and singers are invited to provide music. A raffle will be held after the danceathon and prizes given away.
