Abu Dhabi: Jaywalkers in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the western region, will now face a fine of Dh50, said Abu Dhabi Police after kick-starting an awareness campaign on Sunday.
Speaking to Gulf News, Colonel Hamad Adil Al Shamsi, Director of the Traffic Department of Abu Dhabi Police, said: "Starting January 20, pedestrians who flout the law by crossing at undesignated areas will be fined Dh50.
"If a person is not able to pay the fine on the spot his or her labour card or identity card will be confiscated until the payment is made," he said. The move was put into effect after last year's statistics showed that 91 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in the capital alone.
The awareness campaign against jaywalking under the motto 'pedestrian safety is everyone's responsibility' will go on for a week.
"The campaign will reach out to all sections of the society," Al Shamsi said, adding that leaflets and brochures have been printed in Arabic, English, Urdu and Malayalam.
"From labour camps to streets to community centres and clubs, these brochures will be distributed to the public." Al Shamsi said that police patrol vehicles are on the alert to nab jaywalkers and issue fines.
