Al Ain: Two children, aged two and three, have been killed in two separate road accidents in the city in the past few days.

The traffic police said M.K., a two-year-old Emirati, was playing in front of his home when a speeding car knocked him down in the Al Foah district. The accident happened on Monday evening and the car was reportedly driven by a woman.

The driver sped away from the scene leaving the boy lying in a pool of blood. The critically-injured child was taken to hospital by an eyewitness. He later died from his injuries at Al Ain Hospital.

Police have registered the case and are searching for the woman.

Arrested

On Sunday morning an apparently negligent school bus driver crushed to death W.A.G, a three-year-old kindergarten student. The police said the child had got off the bus at around noon.

The bus conductor closed the door when the child stumbled and fell. The driver reportedly did not realise and started the bus, crushing the child under the rear tyres of the vehicle.

The seriously injured child was later taken to hospital by passers-by but did not survive. The driver was later arrested by the police who denied fleeing the scene.

The growing number of fatal accidents have shocked Al Ain residents as more than 15 people died in various accidents in the first week of this month. The traffic police have repeatedly warned motorists to be careful.
