Abu Dhabi: A truck driver was arrested on Monday by the traffic police for driving dangerously. The truck was confiscated and a fine of Dh10,000 was imposed by the police citing that the driver drove in a reckless manner. The incident happened at Tarif, a day after the highway safety campaign was launched by the police on Sunday.
Traffic patrols have been beefed up as part of the campaign and intensive monitoring is under way at Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Tarif. The main focus of the campaign is the highways, especially at regular accident spots.
On the first two days of the campaign, in Tarif alone, 110 traffic violators were fined. 32 heavy vehicles and 6 cars were confiscated.
Amongst the 32 heavy vehicles confiscated, 29 were for poor condition of tyres.
Major Ahmad Abdullah, head of traffic patrols management in the western region of Abu Dhabi, said: "Drivers must not continue to driver if they feel tired. They must stop the vehicle and rest before continuing."
30 drivers were fined for unfit condition of the vehicle, 19 for failure to follow instructions of traffic policemen, eight for not maintaining adequate distance between vehicles and six for driving dangerously. Other offences include not driving within the lanes, driving in opposite direction of the traffic and overloading of vehicles.
