Dubai: A driver whose was licensed to drive light vehicles has been fined for driving a heavy vehicle after his friend fell asleep and asked him to transport some workers.
Records said the 36-year-old Indian driver's friend felt tired and before he went to sleep he asked his friend to transport the workers from Jebel Ali to their accommodation in Sharjah.
The Dubai Traffic Court of First Instance fined the 36-year-old Indian driver Dh5,000 and denied him the right to apply for a licence to drive heavy vehicles for three months.
The Traffic Public Prosecution charged the accused, identified as M.S., with unlawfully driving a heavy vehicle without obtaining a proper licence.
Traffic police stopped the accused on Shaikh Zayed Road and asked him for his driving licence. He presented his ordinary licence and when the traffic patrol discovered he was not licensed to drive a heavy vehicle, they took him in for questioning.
Unaware
"My friend, identified as N., handed me the keys and asked me to drive the workers back home because he was tired and wanted to sleep. He was unaware that I did not have a licence to drive heavy vehicles," M.S. testified in his police statement.
He also confessed to the charges before the court.
