Abu Dhabi: Car number plate 9 from Abu Dhabi Police has become the third most expensive number plate in the world.
An Abu Dhabi business man who did not want to be named purchased the number for Dh 15.4 million at a charity auction held on Saturday evening, a senior official told Gulf News.
"The number 9, the fifth single digit number in category 5 from Abu Dhabi police has entered the club of most expensive plates in the world like the other four single digit numbers", said Abdulla Matar Al Mannaei, Managing Director of Emirates Auction, which conducts the auction on behalf of Abu Dhabi Police.
"It pushed the number 6 which was sold for Dh 15.3 million last month to fourth position", said Al Mannaei.
Number 29 was sold for Dh 4 million at the ninth auction held on Saturday at Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi, said the official.
The eight auctions had generated more than $105 million which will go towards building a world-class emergency and trauma care centre for victims of road accidents and other debilitating conditions, as announced by General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Minister of Interior.
Abu Dhabi Police and Emirates Auction sold the most expensive license plate in the world -Plate "1" - at its February 16 auction for Dh 52.2 million, smashing the previous Guinness World Record by more than double. Plates 5 and 7 were sold for Dh 25.5 million and Dh11.4 million respectively.
