Dubai: Motorists in Dubai will be able to register online for the carpooling service by the end of this month, said a senior official.

"Our website for issuing carpooling certificates will be ready by the end of this month," said Eisa Al Dossary, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Public Transport Agency at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The RTA has allowed car pooling to reduce use of cars by individuals. Now people can drive their friends and colleagues to and from their homes and workplaces without fear of getting fines provided they get approval from the RTA.

"The purpose of getting the names of passengers registered for car pooling is to discourage people who run illegal taxis. People can always carry their friends and relatives even without getting registered with the RTA," explained Al Dossary.

By doing free online registration, a motorist will be given a certificate allowing him to share his car with maximum of four of his friends or colleagues.

Meanwhile, the RTA has launched a free bus service for its employees encouraging them to stop using their private cars.
