Abu Dhabi: Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Road, popularly known as the Airport Road, will have 20 per cent more capacity thanks to a widening project to be started soon, said an official.
It is the third major project in the city announced by the municipality this year to improve the road infrastructure on Abu Dhabi Island.
The project will be completed within ten months, a senior official told Gulf News on Sunday.
"The more than Dh175 million project to add one more lane to the existing three lanes will be started within one and half months," said Abdullah Al Shamsi, director of road and infrastructure, Abu Dhabi Municipality.
"We completed the widening of a portion of the road last year, from Al Maktha Bridge to Zayed Sports City," he said.
Now the existing three lanes from Zayed Sports City to Hamdan Street intersection, an approximate distance of 9.2 km, will be widened to four lanes, which will improve the capacity by 20 per cent.
Traffic signals will be relocated as required because of the added lane, but the number of traffic signals will remain the same. The project does not involve the construction of any bridges, intersections or flyovers.
During construction the existing roadway width will be reduced but lanes will always be open to traffic, said Ahmad S. Al Seyari, head of the road section.
Ring road
The Al Salam Road (Eastern ring road) upgrade that was announced earlier will increase capacity on that road by 100 per cent.
The roads and parking projects in Marina Village number 1 will also give a major facelift to the city, said the officials.
Seven other road projects in the city include the upgrading of the international highway and the reconstruction of the Mafraq interchange.
