Sharjah: Sharjah will introduce new number plates next week that no longer bear Arabic numerals.
The Traffic and Licensing Department will issue the new number plates in three different categories, which will also cater to motorists with special needs.
"The initiative comes in response to the increasing number of vehicles registered in Sharjah and is in line with changing the number plates according to international standards," said Brig. Humaid Al Hudaidi, Director General of Sharjah Police.
The new number plates follow the standard of neighbouring emirates, where they are written in bold letters in black and white.
The changes were announced after a recent statement by Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Interior Minister, who emphasised that number plates should be unified across the country.
The number plates will change from having an orange background into a white one that will display large, black English numbers that are easy to read.
Motorists with special needs can apply for a special number plate displaying the international symbol of special needs. They must provide a certificate from the Sharjah Humanitarian City while registering.
