Dubai: A speeding pickup truck driver skidded nearly 130 metres after applying his brakes before jumping onto the opposite side of the road, crashing into a concrete mixer truck and killing four workers at Al Mahraqa Roundabout on Saturday evening.
The pick-up driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital following the accident which happened around 6.30pm and caused the death of the workers, who are believed to be Indians, Salah Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution, told Gulf News on Sunday.
"The horrific accident happened in the Jebel Ali area. Obviously the pickup driver was driving at a speed above 160 km/hr ... the driver put on the brakes of his vehicle which skidded nearly 130 metres and jumped to the opposite side of the road, and hit the other vehicle which was moving in the right direction," said Bu Farousha.
Senior Traffic Prosecutor Ayoub Ahli inspected the accident site and asked the Jebel Ali Police to test the pickup driver's blood and urine and examine whether he had been driving under the influence of liquor.
"A special team of traffic experts will inspect the safety of the pickup's tyres and prepare a technical report about the causes of the accident. This is the second tragic accident which has claimed lives this weekend. Those who drive pickups, mini-trucks or minibuses have got to stick to the speed limit [below 100 km/h]," said Bu Farousha.
This was the second tragic accident which happened over the weekend following Thursday evening's accident during which a British driver jumped a red signal at the Mankhool-Bur Dubai junction and hit another vehicle, causing the death of two people.
