Dubai: Expatriate Goans yesterday rejoiced on the resumption of direct flights to the western Indian state of Goa.

"The flights will be operational in a week's time from Dubai instead of Sharjah," said Anand Pandey, country manager Indian airlines.

The airline previously operated two direct flights to Goa each week.

Indian Airlines or Indian as it was later re-named, merged with Air India in 2007 and operated a twice-weekly flight to Goa until March 30. Last December, Air India completely stopped its once-a-week Kuwait-Dubai-Goa flight.

"Direct flights from Dubai to Goa will operate every Thursday and Saturday."

There is a large presence of expatriate Goans in Dubai and neighbouring emirates and their estimated numbers are 75,000.
