Manama: A father's attempt to change his son's name to ensure that he "does not turn into an idiot", has been rejected for insufficient evidence, a local newspaper has reported.

While the paper has not mentioned the boy's name, the father, who approached the lower court in Bahrain seeking the name change, argued that all the boys in the family who had the same name as his son "were stupid and did not succeed in their studies".

He said he became pessimistic about the name and thought that he had to change it to avoid a bleak future for his son.

The court rejected the claim, saying the father's arguments for the name change were not justified, a local newspaper, Akhbar Al Khaleej, reported on Sunday.
