Manama: Bahrain will auction distinguished car number plates and use the proceeds to assist road accident victims, MP Adel Al Mouawda said.

"The foreign affairs, defence and national security committee has approved a proposal to hold biannual auctions for special car number plates," Al Mouawda, who chairs the committee, said on Thursday.

"Funds raised will be used to help victims of traffic accidents, whether by providing them with medical treatment or giving money to their families," he said.

Auctions will be overseen by the traffic directorate. The proposal will have to be approved by the lower and upper houses.

Last week, the interior ministry said it supported the proposal to auction special plates, saying it was already applied in some Gulf states, Australia, Japan and Britain.

However, the ministry said it did not approve of using the proceeds to help traffic accident victims, saying they would get compensation from insurance companies. The ministry suggested that the money be used to enhance safety systems and promote traffic awareness.

A high number people are expected to bid for the special number plates.

Last week, a similar auction in Dubai fetched about Dh35.9 million.
