Dubai:  British citizens have been warned against travelling to Yemen, in light of several recent terrorist attacks.

The London Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), which protects the interests of British citizens abroad, published a statement.

"We advise against all but essential travel to Yemen. There have been a series of recent terrorist attacks both inside and outside the capital Sana'a.

"There is a high threat from terrorism in general in Yemen, including against Western and British interests. You should be particularly vigilant in public places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. We believe that terrorists continue to plan attacks. If you do intend to travel in Yemen you should only do so with a Yemeni military escort."

On April 10 an improvised explosive device exploded at an oil company headquarters in Sana'a. A second device was deactivated. Four days prior to this, an expatriate residential compound in the city came under a mortar attack. It housed US diplomats and Westerners working for an oil company. No casualties were reported and the attack was later claimed by terrorist network Al Qaida.

Last month, the US Embassy in Sana'a was attacked by grenades. The Embassy has since asked non-essential staff and family members to leave the country.

The FCO statement read: "You should take all the necessary steps to protect your safety, and ... make sure that you have confidence in your individual security arrangements ... we advise against using restaurants in the Haddah district of Sana'a."
