Dubai: Al Saada street at Business Bay will have a direct link with Meydan Street through a series of bridges and underpasses, as part of the Dh355 million phase two of the parallel roads project, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Saturday.

Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said that the contract for the key infrastructure project has been awarded and work will begin shortly.

The project will see construction of a 295-metre-long bridge at the junction of Al Meydan Street and Al Saada Street, and another 240-metre-long bridge of three lanes in each direction.

Three underpasses will also be part of the project that will offer additional access to and entrance from Business Bay, easing traffic movement considerably.

The first of the three underpasses will provide a left turn from Al Saada Street in the direction of Al Meydan Street comprising two lanes. It will be 420 metres in length and 13 metres in width,

The second underpass will be on Al Saada Street, comprising two lanes in each direction, and measuring 535 metres in length, and 21 metres in width.

The third underpass is designated for the crossing of horses at Godolphin Stables area, measuring 340 metres in length, and 10 metres in width.

Four kilometres of new roads with lanes ranging from three to four in each direction will be constructed as part of the project, in addition to service roads in the vicinity.

“RTA has completed more than 31 per cent of the phase one of the Parallel Roads Project in the Godolphin area, and the two bridges crossing over the Dubai Water Canal are expected to be completed by end of August. All project works are set for completion in the last quarter of 2017,” said Al Tayer.

Phase one of the project costs Dh578 million and encompasses the construction of a 3.5km-long bridge comprising three lanes in each direction crossing over the Dubai Water Canal.

With the completion of the project, the number of lanes increases to five in each direction above Godolphin Stables and Al Meydan Street up to Al Quoz Industrial Area.

It also includes upgrading the existing junction of Al Meydan Street and Al Khail Street where flyovers will be constructed to provide left turns and ease the snarl at the junction during peak hours.

The project also includes the construction of a two-lane ramp serving inbound traffic from Al Khail Road in the direction of Sharjah to Al Asayel Road up to the junction with Oud Metha Road.

It also includes providing entry and exit points for Meydan Development Project.

“The Parallel Roads Project is one of the vital projects currently undertaken by RTA to ease the congestion on Shaikh Zayed Road. This traffic corridor, which comprises three lanes in each direction, extends 108km parallel to Shaikh Rashid Road from the heart of Dubai to the border of Abu Dhabi Emirate,” said Al Tayer.

The entire project constitutes a traffic hub supporting t Shaikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road and, upon completion of all phases, it will ease traffic movement in the area parallel to Shaikh Zayed Road to the east.

The Dh335 million project is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2018.
