Dubai: Congestion on Al Wasl Street, Al Hadeeqa Street and around the Al Safa Park junction will ease as the Al Wasl flyover opens to traffic on Friday, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Wednesday.

All road diversions will be removed and traffic will be shifted to the four-lane flyover.

A ramp feeding traffic from Jumeirah and Al Athar Road to Hadeeqa Street had opened in March, while another ramp linking Al Wasl Street to Athar Street will open on Friday.

“The flyover passes over the Dubai Water Canal at a height of eight metres, thus allowing free flowing traffic round the clock. This will also improve traffic flow on Al Wasl Street, and for vehicles coming from Jumeirah 1 towards Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3, Hadeeqa Street and vice versa,” said Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA.

The new multi-tier flyover will allow unhindered movement of vehicles and the traffic lights at the Al Safa park junction will be removed.

Al Tayer added that the traffic lights at the intersection of Al Hadeeqa Street with Al Wasl Street will be removed so that traffic moves smoothly on the bridges and underneath along Al Wasl Street heading towards Hadeeqa Street heading right to Bur Dubai, Al Athar Street and Jumeirah.

Once the Al Wasl street flyover opens, the remaining work on the canal underneath the bridges will be completed and all service roads and pavements will also be opened.

As part of phase two of Dubai Canal project, a flyover on Jumeirah Road is also under construction and is set to be ready by mid-July.

A major flyover is also under construction on Shaikh Zayed Road as part of phase one of the canal project, which was partly opened to traffic earlier this year. The second part, for traffic towards Abu Dhabi, is set to open in early July.

All three flyovers allow the canal to flow underneath, serving boats and yachts to navigate unhindered.

Phase three includes construction of 10 marine transit stations, and reclaiming works to build an artificial semi-island along Jumeirah Park, which will double the length of Jumeirah Park Beach, increase the park’s area, and allow for more recreational activities.
