For those who sat in judgement, coupled with astonishment, as an Abu Dhabi-based businessman rebuffed opposition and an enormous bank balance to clinch a car plate of his choice, be assured that it was all for a just cause. Bidding huge amounts of money to attain a special car number plate has always evoked argument among the masses. Some fail to grasp how and why it is done, while others brush it off as sheer extravagance.
The total amount bid last Saturday was a staggering Dh89 million. The suspense generated was extreme, but in the end there will be only one beneficiary: the patients of a proposed hospital due to be set up for accident victims. In retrospect, that is currency well spent.
