The Ras Al Khor sanctuary grew out of the realisation that birds in transit during their summer or winter vacation liked to stop over at the tail end of Dubai Creek.
With more people doing likewise, and many staying on, the urbanisation of Dubai impinged upon the area, so an officially recognised sanctuary was created.
With the increased development around the sanctuary, its upkeep has become critical and more difficult. So perhaps, instead, Dubai should think of creating another sanctuary, far from the madding crowd, for future frequent flyers.
For the assistance of our feathered friends directions to the new sanctuary can be given by balloon, similar to the one above the Gulf News office celebrating our 30th year.
