With the increase in the number and scope of development projects that are taking place in various sectors in the UAE, it is critical that the technological factor also become an integrated part of these projects. The implementation of e-government is a mandate of necessity if efficiency and transparency are to be achieved. According to government officials, 50 per cent of government services would be offered through e-government portals this year. By 2010, this would rise to 90 per cent.
But the drive for a total commitment and implementation of the e-government should go beyond the numbers. It should mature to a level by which a measurement is set to quantify the types of services on offer as much as their quality. It should further assess the calibre of the services on offer as much as assess by how far improvements have been brought about to people's lives.
