The implementation of a black point system for traffic offences across all the emirates is a welcome step, as it aims to reduce the number of deaths on the roads. But in order for the new system to succeed, it is important that it is reviewed regularly and the public is made fully aware of its clauses.
The Unified Federal Traffic Law, which will become effective on March 1, will put into place hefty penalties against serious offences. "Earlier, errant drivers could get away with paying comparatively low fines, but from now on the rules are getting tough," said Lieutenant General Saif Al Shafa'ar, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Interior.
Introducing such laws would undoubtedly assist in improving safety conditions on the roads - a necessity resulting from the increase in the number of vehicles as much as accidents.
According to the ministry, no less than 1,056 people lost their lives last year in road accidents. But beyond the body count and the stringent laws, the public's involvement in the campaign is critical if it is to succeed. The first step is to ensure their awareness of all aspects of the new system.
