The shortage of accommodation in Abu Dhabi is an issue that has been recognised by the authorities for some time now. The approach to resolving the problem should be based on how the majority of people would benefit. Within this context, the recent decision to get the private sector involved in partially organising the housing market is a step in the right direction.
The idea behind such an approach is to make use of the private sector's expertise in certain areas. Although the government would continue to fund new projects, their tender and development programmes are assigned to a commercial private institution. Accordingly, its responsibility would include improvement of services and the like. This is a grand undertaking given that there are about 3,500 commercial buildings in Abu Dhabi. Seeking efficiency and effective structures is always welcome. Hence, when it comes to addressing housing, all economic strata should be included.
