The announcement that the Dubai Government is to start a new low-cost airline to complement its existing premium airline, Emirates, will come as good news to many travellers. Although there are already a few low-cost carriers in the region, the expertise gained through the management of Emirates will doubtless filter off to the low-cost airline, to the benefit of passengers. The existing low-cost carriers have shown there is good demand for cheaper flights to regional destinations, with many people taking advantage of not only the economical fares being applied, but also the ability to spend long weekends away as a respite.

The low-cost carriers doubtless will prove most popular to those expatriates who are in the lower income bracket and are forced to economise as much as possible. Now, with airlines offering the possibility of economical flights to their home destinations, there arises the possibility of workers being able to travel home every year, instead of every two or three years, as often happens now.

Airlines globally are now recognising that air travel is no longer a luxury form of travel reserved for the wealthier classes, but an essential means of travel from one country to another.
