The most common cancer affecting women in the UAE is breast cancer. In many cases, it is only discovered at an advanced stage - usually early detection highly increases survival chances.
It therefore comes as great news that for the first time in the UAE, women covered by the National Health Insurance Company (Daman) will get insurance coverage for an annual breast cancer screening programme.
The fact that this includes radiology and laboratory investigations, which can be very costly, is equally terrific news. Other insurance companies should follow suit.
This is because a solid health insurance policy will most likely give women a higher chance of overcoming breast cancer through regular mammograms and clinical breast exams.
The bottom line is, early detection saves lives and all women should have the opportunity to get tested at least once a year. Hopefully, this announcement by Daman will set a precedent for others in the country.
