As a newspaper, we have been spearheading a campaign to reduce the usage of plastic bags in the UAE. This is especially important as the prolific number of plastic bags used, and the casual way in which they are disposed of, means the bags can be found almost anywhere, spoiling the environment and dissuading visitors and tourists to return to the countryside.
So it is with particular pleasure to note that the Sharjah Cooperative Society is the first company in the country to introduce biodegradable plastic bags. These bags, made from a specially formulated plastic, are claimed to degrade completely within four to nine months, maybe quicker in the UAE as an essential ingredient for its degradability is ultraviolet light, of which there is an abundance.
It is hoped that other retailers will follow the good example being set by the Sharjah Cooperative Society, and start using biodegradable plastic bags.
