Despite millions of dirhams spent in building roads, the thrust is geared towards vehicular traffic. Yet regardless of the transport used, public or private, everyone has to complete their journey on foot. But it is the lack of facilities for pedestrians that makes crossing roads a high-risk situation.

There are inadequate pedestrian bridges or tunnels to allow people to cross busy roads without fear for either drivers or pedestrians. Worse than that, with many roads being up to 12 lanes (as is Shaikh Zayed Road) it makes it impossible for people to get from one side of the road to the other without transport. Expecting a taxi to undertake the journey, assuming one is available within a reasonable time, is an exercise in futility as the driver will want a more profitable fare, i.e. further distance. Sadly, the consequence of inadequate crossings has seen an increase in deaths and injuries.
