To complement the UAE aid already going to Myanmar, the Dubai Cares Foundation will pay for 200 temporary schools there. His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was quick to respond to the requirements of the needy, instructed the Foundation to start erecting makeshift schools in areas affected by the cyclone which has devastated the country, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake. It is estimated that as many as 100,000 Myanmarese may have lost their lives, but it is likely to be some time before the final figure is known, if ever.

It will be recalled that the Dubai Cares Foundation, inspired by Shaikh Mohammad primarily to help educate one million children in poor countries around the world, was only established just over six months ago, through magnificent public contributions totalling Dh1.7 billion, a sum which was matched by a generous donation of equal amount from Shaikh Mohammad, making a total of Dh3.4 billion. It is appropriate that one of the first recipients of the Foundation's funds will be for education, the main emphasis for the initial drive for funds.
