The Creek in Dubai has been synonymous with the development of the emirate. From a narrow haven for fishermen and pearlers to the present bustling centre of a busy city, the Creek will continue to make an important contribution to life in Dubai for a long time to come. Following successive widening and dredging of the Creek, which separates Bur Dubai from Deira, both banks attracted ever-increasing numbers of businesses and residences to the area which over the years has expanded outward in all directions to allow for the increasing population and commercial activity. Such is the attraction of the Creek that it has on occasions been called "The Venice of the Middle East" - a description that is particularly apt when seen at night.
As part of the continuing development of Dubai, a new and exciting project has been announced: Khor Dubai, which will encompass four million square feet of redevelopment on both sides of the Creek. Proposed will be museums, galleries, theatres and workshops for painters and sculptors which are sure to be a major attraction to what is already considered a significant draw for tourists. Complementing these will be luxury hotels and residential buildings, and bazaars and marinas to provide added benefit to visiting the area.
The ambitious plan, estimated to cost Dh7 billion, is aimed at making Dubai a principal centre for cultural and civilised dialogue between peoples, with special emphasis on the historic aspects of the region, as it will incorporate many traditional design aspects into the architecture of the development. Without doubt the concept will further endear Dubai to residents and tourists alike as an added attraction to projects planned, in the process of being built, or already completed, with the aim of making Dubai the ideal place in which to live, work or vacation.
