The organisation of the UAE's first Documentary Film Competition is a positive step, as it would encourage young Emirati artists to venture into an exciting field - that is of filmmaking. It is necessary that young talent is encouraged to blossom in fields not as common as others.

The competition's awards ceremony held last week concluded with a group of young Emirati women from Zayed University winning in one of the categories. The award, supervised by a group of international experts, was received with great interest as the number of competing documentaries exceeded 100.

Undoubtedly, talented young Emiratis must be encouraged to pursue filmmaking and be supported financially and otherwise. That quite a few Emiratis are becoming involved in filmmaking attests to the fact that the field needs support and encouragement. After all, a society with no commitment to the arts would be a community that is incomplete.
