It is very gratifying to note that, in general, most construction companies in the UAE are observing the midday break rule, and allowing their workers to rest at this hottest time of the day. The concept of a midday break was introduced four years ago, following the rise in the number of heat-exhausted workers who were being admitted to hospital. This year, so far there has been only one case of a worker's death due to heat exhaustion, although there have also been a few workers admitted to hospital for treatment.
With temperatures hovering around the high 40's Celsius - and even touching 50 a week ago - it is only right and proper that consideration should be given to these industrious workers, all of whom work on minimum rates of pay with harsh living conditions. A short rest at midday will go a long way to improving productivity of the company.
