It is unfortunate that the various development projects in the country have adversely affected the environment. According to the World Wide Fund UAE (WWF UAE), quarrying and the cement industry could be a factor in the destruction of the natural habitat of wild animals in the northern emirates. Construction in many parts of the country has left its negative effects on precious arid habitats.

"Crushing and quarries for mineral extraction not only mean an irreversible loss of habitat, but also create an added stress to what remains of arid mountain mammal populations," Christophe Tourenq of the WWF UAE said.

By no means should the process of development stop. But a fine balance needs to be found between development and the environment. Building for the future should not come at the expense of a wasted environment.
