The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has announced it will offer cash incentives for residents to reduce their daily usage of services.

While initially only offering 13 cash prizes, the move is part of a larger programme to include practical tips to conserve electricity and water.

In addition, Gulf News also noted that a new federal law on water conservation will soon be ready. Guidelines and standards are currently being worked on, according to Dr Mohommad Mustafa Al Mulla, deputy minister in the Ministry of Environment and Water.

Currently, there is no federal water conservation law.

Both of these measures, small and large, are to be welcomed. Governments have a role in saving our natural resources. So too do local authorities, such as Dewa.

But it doesn't end there. Each and every one of us must do our part by consciously switching off lights, turning down the thermostat and using less water.
