Circle October 14 in your calendar. That's the date Dubai International Airport's new Terminal 3 will come on stream, beginning a bright new chapter in luxury, comfort and convenience for air travellers.

Right now, various parts of the terminal, which will be exclusively used by Emirates, are undergoing extensive testing. Dubai Airport conducted one test using 2,000 volunteers on August 9, with two other larger-scale tests due to be held in the coming weeks. The more tests the better.

All of this is good news for travellers.

Officials have also decided to phase in the opening of Terminal 3 in gradual increments. But prudence needs to be the order of the day. There is only one chance to get things right when Terminal 3 opens.

The last thing Dubai, Emirates, or the airport needs is a repeat of the debacle of Heathrow's Terminal 5 in March, where the baggage system utterly failed.
