The scourge of cancer is one that can strike anyone at any time. It's a debilitating illness that requires a proper mental attitude as well as physical reserves to fully overcome, regardless of the individual prognosis.
Sadly, several employers are being investigated by the UAE Human Rights Association for discriminating against workers who have been struck by the disease.
The association found, for example, that hundreds of women were reluctant to undergo examinations and screening for breast cancer because they feared their employers would sack them if their test results were positive.
This is a sad situation. Rightfully, the labour law forbids such actions on behalf of employers. Those who abuse or mistreat sick workers need to be punished to the fullest extent of the country's laws.
Such a situation should not be tolerated for one minute. But attitudes need also to change. And awareness is essential. The Human Rights Association should be lauded for its work in this regard.
