If you were stuck in traffic on Dubai's Shaikh Zayed Road, muttered at having to pay Salik tolls, or couldn't find a parking space in Abu Dhabi, you were not alone. Just another normal day of traffic congestion and frustrated driving throughout the UAE.

Yesterday, however, was World Car-free Day: A day when motorists were supposed to forsake their air-conditioned SUVs and luxury cars for public transport or alternative means of getting around.

The reality, however, is that no one knew - and few cared. And who can blame them. There is not yet a practical public transport network across the UAE.

Next year, when World Car-free Day rolls around, at least you'll be able to take the Metro in Dubai, will avoid Salik, and will do your blood pressure and the local environment some good.

Hopefully, there will be less traffic on the road, even if just for one day. Somehow, though, it's doubtful: We love our air-conditioning and comfort too much.
