Lebanon today stands at a crossroads - between taking a stride towards peace and stability or taking a step towards war and disintegration. It is up to the conflicting and warring parties to decide the direction in which the country is to proceed.
The Lebanese Army's recent stepping in is a welcome step as it would help in bringing about calm to the unrest. Defusing tensions on the streets of the capital is necessary to find a way out of the current state of unrest in the country.
In fact, the army has taken the right decision by remaining above the political and ideological disagreements that are pulling the country in different directions. To maintain unity, the army is required to continue with this stand, as its entanglement in any political feud could prove detrimental to the entire country.
As the Arab League comes together for consultation and discussion on how best to resolve the situation, expectations should not run high on this front. The Arab League will once again prove to be helpless in addressing Lebanon's crises. It will miserably fail to provide any solution to the current crisis, which has been the case on several occasions before.
Hence, Lebanon should not be dependent on the Arab world to assist it in its times of difficulty for it could prove to be useless. Nor should the Lebanese people seek the input of other organisations or countries, for the solution lies within themselves and nowhere else.
If the country is to be saved from an all-out war or instability, the various groups should vigorously look for a common ground where all can meet. Foremost, it is the people who are capable of protecting their nation from coming closer to the verge of complete chaos.
