With the arrival of a senior Syrian official to Lebanon, the diplomatic relations between the two nations are hoped to be forged according to a new, fresh, and conciliatory approach. The neighbouring countries have no choice but to use all the necessary means to build a fruitful relationship.

Lebanese President Michel Sulaiman's reception yesterday of Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al Mua'alem marks a new chapter between the two sides. The meeting comes a week after both agreed to establish diplomatic ties for the first time. This culminated with the extension of a Syrian invitation for Sulaiman to visit Damascus and the possibility of opening up embassies in the respective capitals. For some time now, relations between the two countries were strained for various reasons. As the general environment is conducive for more bilateral cooperation, the two sides should take full advantage of it and take their relationship forward.
