In an attempt to liven up the game of cricket, the Indian Premier League decided to introduce a limited-over series: Twenty20. To complement the more dramatic style, Bollywood and all its attendant frippery became involved. And that included cheerleaders, specially imported, to dance in unison at appropriate occasions, such as when boundaries and sixes were scored.

It now seems objections are being raised. Cricketing purists argue that it deviates from the essential beauty of the game; spectators, of which there are many, claim it is the beauties at the game they would prefer to see. A further objection is to the scantily-clad young ladies having to be imported, but whether it is the scantily clad bit, or the importation of the girls, is not yet clear.

Maybe if the cheerleaders prove to be a way of livening up an otherwise slow game, they could be used at chess matches.
