It may be a leap year but no one should jump to conclusions. Legend has it that women can make proposals of marriage on February 29. Yet the reason February, in the Gregorian calendar, has an extra day every four years has nothing to do with romance. A complete revolution of the planet around the sun takes approximately 365 days and 6 hours. So every four years, an extra day is added.

No doubt somewhere in the world today, a brave lady may pop the question - but the day is also a good time to reflect on the plight of the planet. After all it comes about due to the planet's uneven progress around the sun.

The last February 29, in 2004, the environment was not as hot a topic as it is today. In four years time will we be able to say that the scourge of global warming is being effectively dealt with?
