Three years ago, the UN started a decade-long campaign titled World Water Day. On Thursday it celebrated that day, although today is the start of this year's official drive, under the heading International Year of Sanitation.
The aim is to reduce by half the 2.6 billion people globally who do not have access to basic sanitation.
Not only is there a requirement for basic sanitation in many of the poorer countries, but there also a desperate need for potable water in the developed countries, as the supply is rapidly dwindling.
It is predicted that in time, with climate changes taking effect, wars will be based not so much on political aspirations or territory, but on access to clean drinking water.
The UAE is among the highest users of water globally, despite being in a desert region. Profligate usage of water can be seen everywhere with no apparent concern for future generations. Such habits must end.
