Which is more important: food on your table or fuel in your vehicle? A no-brainer, as some would say, as obviously food is essential as it is fuel for our bodies, and fuel for a vehicle is a luxury.
But more and more foods are being diverted for use as biofuels, so less and less basic food becomes available.
Indian Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has chided developed countries for their "outrageous" attitude in using basic foodstuffs, such as corn, soya beans, sugar cane and other crops as a cheap source of energy, when so many in the world are in desperate need of these items.
In the US approximately 20 per cent of its corn is used to make biofuels, presumably to offset the high prices paid for importing oil. The US sees this as a better alternative to reducing oil consumption. There are many starving people in the world who would disagree.
