The UN-backed Earth Day on Monday gives everyone an opportunity to introspect on what efforts each one of us can make towards preserving the planet. There are many ways in which even the smallest contribution will help meet the overall requirements towards climate change and environmental despoliation. The former tends to be geared towards industry and government to make the big decisions, while the latter can be overcome by a combined effort from each and every one of us.
To this end, Gulf News is spearheading a campaign to put an end to the usage of plastic bags, not only because they are environmentally unfriendly, but because they divert precious resources into an area which ends up as garbage, and usually garbage that is not biodegradable.
Commerce in the UAE should come on board and join our campaign if they are truly convinced of the need to protect our environment.
