While it is laudable that peace attempts are being made between the Pakistan federal government and Taliban militants, caution should not be thrown to the winds leaving Pakistan vulnerable to further attack.
The problem with negotiating peace deals with the Taliban is not knowing whether the negotiators speaking on their behalf are able to speak for the whole lot, a majority, or just some rag-tag army that has become disillusioned and wants to change to the winning side. The difficulties of negotiating with Afghan rebels have been known for many, often tribes of groupings changing side according to their convenience or financial reward.
The Pakistan federal government entered the negotiations in the belief that President Pervez Musharraf's policy was too war-like and not sufficiently diplomatic. But let it be hoped the peace deal does not create a hiatus during which it gives time for the Taliban to re-arm.
