Energy was the theme of the talks between Iran and India yesterday. Apart from setting up a platform for common commercial accord, the expression also represented the verve, vigour and vitality in mutual understanding between these two great civilisations.
India will be hoping to gain much via these discussions, given that it imports almost 70 per cent of its energy.
The unhindered operation of the 2,600 kilometre, $7.5 billion gas pipeline, which extends from Iran and enters India via Pakistan is therefore of immense significance.
India-Iran relations have long been propped up by the strength of its bilateral interactions. It is a contact that is viewed with suspicion, especially by the US. But India is sensibly allergic to this while pursuing its own domestic policy.
On the other hand, Iran's dialogue on energy deals with Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and India can only give rise to more stability in the region.
