If anyone thought the Myanmar junta would be more sympathetic towards opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi at this time, then obviously they have not been following events there for the past decade or more.
Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest for nearly two decades following her victory in a democratic election, was due for release two days ago, according to the constitution, or brought to trial having served five years in confinement.
Instead the military junta extended her term by a further year - a disgrace that afforded little more than a ripple in global opinion.
Western countries, somewhat naïvely, were hoping that the recent aid being given in the wake of Cyclone Nargis, and its reluctant eventual acceptance by the regime, would make the generals more forgiving and receptive to the release of Suu Kyi. But the generals, once again, have thumbed their noses at public opinion.
