It is a cruel irony but Zimbabwe has the dubious claim of being the country with the most millionaires per head of population. This is not something to celebrate, but rather an index of misery. A cup of coffee costs more than 30 million Zimbabwe dollars.

Zimbabwe's president, Robert Mugabe, compares an election campaign to fighting a war and accuses the opposition of treason and treachery for having the temerity to challenge him through the ballot box.

The head of an African observer mission in Zimbabwe has warned that he will not endorse next week's run-off if violence persists. And all the while the one country that does have influence in Zimbabwe, South Africa, continues to stay quiet, at least in public.

There is another irony at play: The country that benefited from the international outcry over apartheid has chosen to say little over injustices in a neighbouring country.
