It is disturbing to learn that diseases such as polio are still endemic in countries like Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Nigeria. It is the 21st century and diseases like polio are supposed to have been eradicated. Instead, the number of people, mostly children, stricken by it is on the rise.
Doctors in Pakistan report strange reasons for the increase in registered polio cases- 67 children this year, up from 37 in all of 2007. One report indicates that parents refuse to allow their children to be given the transparent drops, especially in the North West Frontier Province. The report says the parents are being advised by 'hardline' clerics who claim the drops will make their children infertile - a classic case of ignorance.
Diseases like polio are not supposed to exist, particularly in states where spending on high cost projects like nuclear armament is high. Advanced and modern countries are normally judged by the well-being of their citizens.
