Prevent fog-related accidents
A friend of mine died in a fog-related accident in the UAE, recently. It prompted me to think about the loss, and how this kind of death could perhaps have been prevented.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) does not have a comment or letters page like Gulf News.
I suggest the RTA institutes a pilot programme to test a speed bump or vibration strip system that automatically deploys once fog is detected.
As the fog gets worse, the bumps are more pronounced which would force traffic to slow down.

Say no to plastic
Gulf News is getting a lot of credit for creating awareness about camels dying from ingesting plastic bags. By the looks of it, children seem to be more aware.
Some of us feel that using plastics is more convenient, cheap and reliable. What can we do to stop this completely?
For starters, realising that animals are also vital to our world would help. Hopefully this thought would help us eliminate the use of plastic.

Misleading picture
This is in reference to the recent report on rice crisis ("India warms up to rice exports to UAE," Gulf News, April 25).
The report highlights comments from talks between the UAE Minister of Economy Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri and the Indian Commerce Minister Kamal Nath.
However, the photo along with the report is of a teenager, in Manila, holding rice bags. The least the news editors could have done was to put a picture that reflected UAE.
I've noticed that a previous report also had a similar photograph. Gulf News is not for a specific group of people.
If that were the case, I would rather subscribe to another newspaper, one that covers real news.

Open a recycling centre
I have been reading Gulf News for the past 14 years. I don't have a favourite section, as I simply love reading all the products.
I start from the first line on the front page of the main paper and read through Sport, tabloid!, E+, Friday, Unwind, Explore and Weekend Review, to name a few.
All Gulf News columnists are simply superb. I have just one suggestion for the newspaper - it would be ideal if some paper recycling centres were set up by it in Abu Dhabi.

Unofficial parking
I request the concerned authorities to take stern action against people who reserve parking by keeping their personal items.
The municipality allots the reserved parking, with the car registration details nailed to the footpath.
Other than this, if anyone is found reserving a parking space, he or she should be penalised.
The concerned authorities should look into this matter?

Low salary, high rents
It is a shame that while the average salary of many people is Dh1,700, the rent of a two bedroom apartment is not less than Dh10,000 per month.
Could the authorities please look into this? Stern action must be taken against violators who charge exorbitant rents so that they reduce it.

Hefty bill for fixed charges
I purchased a handheld device and applied for an internet connection for it with etisalat. The service I subscribed to was payable for Dh185 per month with unlimited access.
However, at the end of the month I received a bill of Dh1,200. I tried calling etisalat's customer service centre, but the agents weren't able to help me.
I visited a branch office and was asked to go to the main office to solve my problem. There, I was requested to send in a written complaint for them to look into the matter.
I did and on revisiting the office a month later was notified that someone would call me to solve my problem.
It has been two months now, and not only has no one contacted me but my outgoing number has been blocked because I haven't paid the internet bill.

Editor's note: The complaint was forwarded to etisalat for comments. However, despite repeated reminders, its management failed to respond.
Update traffic updates
Some radio stations provide traffic updates during rush hour. But since these updates are based on reports provided by listeners, sometimes the information they give is inaccurate.
This is because the listeners are stuck in traffic jams and are unaware of the actual reason for the traffic congestion.
Why don't these radio stations check with the police before giving updates? This way, they can be assured of providing accurate, updated information.

Stop littering
The problem of littering in Dubai is disgraceful. A trip to the beach is spoilt by the incredible amount of plastic bags, bottles and packets that lie on the sand.
Seeing people throw their trash wherever they like is a common sight. This is disgusting behaviour, especially when a dustbin is just three metres away.
Littering mars Dubai's burgeoning reputation and it paints a sad picture of the indifference that some people have towards the environment.
I urge residents to stop being lazy and to care more about the city.

No transport to Mussaffah
Many residents of Musaffah industrial area are suffering due to the lack of transportation along the Abu Dhabi-Mussafah route.
Public buses have stopped using this road about a year ago and commuters are put to inconvenience.
I urge the concerned authorities to please look into the situation.
