1943: Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is born in the Al Shindagha area of Dubai. He is the eldest son of Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, then ruler of the emirate of Dubai. 1958: Shaikh Maktoum makes his first public speech on the accession of his father. 1960s: Shaikh Maktoum completes his schooling in the UAE and is sent by his father to pursue education at one of Britain's leading universities. Shaikh Maktoum addresses the people of Dubai on behalf of his father, and from that moment onwards, Shaikh Maktoum becomes his father's right-hand man. 1968: Shaikh Maktoum joins his father for talks with other Trucial States on the formation of the UAE federation.
1971: Following the establishment of the UAE federation, Shaikh Maktoum is appointed the first Prime Minister. 1972: Shaikh Maktoum chairs the first meeting of the UAE Cabinet. 1979: Shaikh Maktoum stands down from his Prime Ministerial post and his father takes over. 1981: Shaikh Rashid falls ill and the responsibility falls firmly on his four sons. Shaikh Maktoum oversees the management of day-to-day affairs of Dubai. Throughout the 1980s Shaikh Maktoum took on more duties, paying particular attention to the promotion of law and order and education. He quickly gained a reputation of being a philanthropist through his generous work. He funded many humanitarian projects such as orphanages in developing countries and building of schools both locally and internationally. 1983: Shaikh Maktoum returns to the Cabinet as Deputy Prime Minister. 1990: Shaikh Maktoum officially becomes the Ruler of Dubai. Shaikh Maktoum is also officially elected Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE. During his rule, Shaikh Maktoum focused on nationwide development projects.
